How the BMF was Started

In 1978, Greg Meacham was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a Member of Parliament for the riding of Calgary South. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs from 1984-1986 and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance from 1991-1993. In 1993, he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at ATB Financial where he served until 1997 when he was appointed Deputy Chairman and CEO at Telus Communications. In 2002, he became President and Chief Operating Officer at BCE Inc., a position he held until 2004 when he left BCE to become a consultant with Mercer Management Consulting.
In 2005, Greg Meacham founded the Big Meech Foundation with the goal of ending corruption. The foundation has made significant progress since its inception and has helped numerous organizations fight against graft and bribery.

Big Meech was born in Oakland, California on February 5th, 1951. His parents were active in the black civil rights movement, and his childhood was steeped in activism. After graduating from high school in 1969, he attended California State University at Sacramento where he studied computer science. While there, he became involved with the underground hacking community and started making connections that would later help him achieve success.
In 1977, Big Meech founded the first online bulletin board system (BBS), which allowed users to communicate with each other over telephone lines. This was a revolutionary development at the time – many people couldn’t even afford to own a telephone! The BBS quickly became popular among hackers and computer enthusiasts alike, and Big Meech was eventually able to sell it to Sequoia National Laboratories. This led to his first major business venture – developing software for NASA.

Big Meech is keeping him from abusing drugs again. He has been sober since January and credits his wife with helping him stay clean.
Meech met his wife while he was in treatment for addiction. “I was going through a really tough time, and she came to visit me,” he said. “She was the one that talked me into getting help.”
Meech credits his wife with being there for him when he needed it and helping him stay on track. “She’s always been supportive,” he said. “When I slip up, she’s there to help me get back on track.”
